World number three Lee Westwood looks to have changed equipment ahead of the US Open at The Olympic Club next week by switching to the new Ping i20 irons and the Ping Nome putter.

It is only the third time in his professional career that Westwood has changed his irons, having used his Ping i10s since 2007 and the Ping Zing 2 from 1994. But he has now switched to the Ping i20 irons, which feature a slightly shorter blade length and less offset than his previous irons.

He is using the new equipment at the Nordea Masters in Sweden and leads the field after the second day on a 12-under-par total. Judging by how well he is playing, he could continue the change into the second Major of the year next week.

He said: "I'm gradually getting used to them. I like these irons because they penetrate really well. I like the way the bounce moves through the ground. I was using the i10s but just into the wind there's a bit more offset and I'd get them climbing a little bit more.

"Into the wind today, the 7 iron on the second last hole I had 176 yards with a slight breeze into and it pitched past the flag so it's nice that I can keep my distance up even when I turn into a slight breeze."

As well as the i20 irons, Westwood has also followed the lead of fellow Ping player Hunter Mahan by switching to the Ping Nome putter. Mahan started using the mallet putter at the WGC Matchplay in Arizona this year and went on to win.

To finish off his bag overhaul, Westwood has also switched his Ping Tour-W wedges for the newer Ping Tour-S as he looks to break his Major duck next week.
